What is the upside of your negative behavior?

negative behavior

What is the one negative behaviour or habit you wish you could break out of?

Maybe it’s controlling the time you spend scrolling on your phone.

Or giving up procrastinating important tasks

Or something else

Chances are you’ve tried a few times but haven’t been able to make a change.

And why does that happen?

Short answer – all negative behaviours have a “positive payoff”

Which means that your subconscious mind sees some advantage in continuing with the behaviour.

Or

The behaviour fulfils a need.

🟧 Perhaps scrolling through the phone endlessly helps you deal with boredom or stress.
🟧 Or procrastinating helps you deal with anxiety and gives momentary relief.

So if you want to let go of a negative trait you have to find a way to get rid of the positive payoff.

OR

Find a different behaviour to fulfil the same need.

Like, what would help you deal with the boredom, stress or anxiety other than the current habit?

(The other way to break through a habit is to increase the negative impact much more than the positive payoff of the behaviour.)

What are some habits you’ve been trying to break out of?

What is the positive payoff of these habits?
