How comfortable are you making decisions when there is uncertainty?

Like if you have to make a decision with incomplete information.

Or you need to execute a plan with low clarity?

Uncertainty is uncomfortable for anyone. More so when you are a leader. And if the stakes are high.

And it is uncomfortable because  :

  1. It makes us feel like we don’t have control.
  2. We fear failure when we can’t predict outcomes.
  3. And there is always the pressure to perform.

Unfortunately, uncertainty will always be around in varying degrees. We will never ever have an environment where things will be 100% certain.

And to thrive in uncertainty does not mean getting rid of it but accepting and working with it.

Some ways to get comfortable with uncertainty

  1. Embrace ambiguity: Acknowledge that uncertainty is a natural part of any complex situation and try to find ways to embrace it. See it as an opportunity for growth and learning rather than a threat.
  2. Develop a growth mindset: Leaders with a growth mindset believe that their abilities and skills can be developed over time. They are more likely to see uncertainty as an opportunity to learn and improve rather than a barrier to success.
  3. Stay informed: Stay up to date with the latest news, trends, and developments in your field or industry. This will help you anticipate potential challenges and opportunities, and respond to them more effectively.
  4. Focus on what you can control: Recognize that there will always be things outside of your control. Focus on the things you can control, such as your own actions and behaviours, and work to create a plan that can adapt to changing circumstances.
  5. Prepare for the worst: Have a plan for the worst-case scenario. Because if you can’t predict success it makes sense to have a Plan B
