I hereby declare you “leader”!! 👑
This is literally how a large number of leadership promotions happen in organizations
🟡 An internal job posting is released. The application criteria largely include performance and achievements in the current role AND tenure in the organization.
🟡 The eligible applicants are evaluated on a few hypothetical situations.
🟡 And the person closest to giving the best answers is declared the winner.
The new leader is then expected to “magically” develop leadership capabilities overnight as they set about managing their new role.
⚫ Some get overwhelmed.
⚫ Some rely on what they’ve seen others do.
⚫ Some use Google as their training resource.
Most just wing it. 🚀
It is no wonder so many new leaders fail❗
And when they do their teams and the organization bear the brunt of their failure.
But instead of blaming the leaders for failing, the question organizations need to ask themselves are:
✅ What are we doing to prepare leaders for the role “before” they are promoted?
✅ Once promoted what training, coaching and mentoring are we providing to make managers successful and feel supported in their new role?
