Why a good coach may not give you advice

“I am looking for someone to give me advice.”

I hear this from a lot of prospective clients reaching out to me for coaching support on their careers, business or leadership development.

They say this partly because they believe that a coach’s job is to give advice.

But mostly, they say this because they believe they need the advice to resolve their problems.

Both beliefs are not true.

A good coach will not give you advice.

And a lot of times you think you need advice but you really don’t.

As a practicing coach for over a decade, I am yet to meet a person who (with the right coaching) does not have the capability, creativity or resources to solve their own issue.

What they do lack sometimes is resourcefulness and the ability to use their strengths to the fullest.

Having said that I don’t want to suggest that coaching is the grand solution to all problems.

It is not!
